Wednesday, June 27, 2012

So, it's Thursday, and the last week in June, which means two things: Blog Bounce time and summer is in full swing! With summer heating up, we have a great surprise for you (though I don't think that it will cool you off any). Omnific Publishing is releasing two outtakes from its upcoming release The Winemaker's Dinner by Everly Drummond and Dr. Ivan Rusilko. These FREE downloads will be available at Omnific Publishing on July 1st.

Here are a few little samples of what you will get!

The Winemaker's Dinner:  RSVP ((The Winemaker's Feast, Outtake #1)
Meet Dr. Ivan Rusilko: He’s a doctor at a world-class medical facility in Miami, he’s got a killer apartment on Miami Beach that overlooks Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline, and he’s got a great group of friends and quite the social schedule. It’s a pretty damned charmed life, but something’s missing. He’d love a special someone to share it with—someone to laugh with, share his dreams with, and someone to just plain tickle his fancy. After a string of utterly forgettable blind dates and with no real prospects on the horizon, it’s time to take action. On the long drive from Miami Beach to Sarasota, Florida, for the annual Winemaker’s Dinner, Ivan makes a decision. He’s taking charge of his love life—and his fate.

RSVP is a short-story prequel to the highly anticipated erotic romance The Winemaker’s Dinner: Appetizers by co-authors Dr. Ivan Rusilko and Everly Drummond. RSVP is an introduction to the romantic hero and real-life author Dr. Ivan Rusilko, and it marks the good doctor’s solo writing debut.

And for a little taste:

For more information on RSVP you can check out Goodreads.

The Winemaker's Dinner: No Reservations (The Winemaker's Feast: Outtake #2)
Jaden Thorne is living the dream. Well, not exactly the dream, but her dream—if you call working sixteen-hour days in a hot kitchen a dream, which she does. She’s the executive chef at the hottest new restaurant in Miami Beach, and she’s worked her ass off to get there. When her boss suddenly falls ill, she’s gifted two tickets to the premiere food and wine event of the season. Jaden jumps at the opportunity to network, and with her best friend, Tasha, in tow, she’s soon on a road trip to Sarasota, Florida, for the Winemaker’s Dinner—and a good time.

No Reservations is a short-story prequel to the highly anticipated fictionalized erotic romance The Winemaker’s Dinner: Appetizers by co-authors Dr. Ivan Rusilko and Everly Drummond. No Reservations is an introduction to the romantic heroine in the series, Jaden Thorne, and is written by erotic romance author Everly Drummond.

More teasing...

And more can be found about No Reservations on Goodreads

The Winemaker’s Dinner outtakes, RSVP and No Reservations will be available for download on July 1, 2012 for FREE from the Omnific Publishing website.

"Find" Your Way to a Tighter Manuscript (and Blog Bounce)

We have a guest post today here at Omnific. Thanks to editor, Beverly Nickelson, for the wonderful insight into what an editor loves to see when they get a manuscript.

Editing is tedious work, and after reading through a manuscript enough times, it’s easy to become blinded to the little things. But the little things are important, and when sending a manuscript to a publisher or literary agent, every writer wants his or her manuscript to be as polished as possible.  So what to do when you’re in the middle of an edit and going cross-eyed?  I say take a step back and let your word processor’s search function do some of the work.

Below are five easy ways you can use the search function (in Microsoft Word go to Edit and select Find OR press control+F) to polish your manuscript.

1.  Pare back on overused words

The exact words will be unique to each author, so read through your work objectively, and if any word jumps out at you as potentially overused, do a search and see how frequently it pops up.  You might be surprised.  Substitute for or eliminate the word where you can.

Words that I see frequently overused:  Finally, Actually, Suddenly, Headed/Heading, Looked/Looking, Really, Just.

2. That’s enough

“That” is so overused it gets its own category.  For whatever reason, the word flows easily off the keyboard, but using too many gets annoying for readers. Go ahead and “that” all you want during the writing process, but before you send the manuscript on for review, do a search and get rid of those “that”s that aren’t necessary.

This:
She thought that it was odd that he didn’t tell her that he was going.

Could be:
She thought it was odd he didn’t tell her he was going.

3. Contractions—please use them.

When writing, it comes naturally to spell everything out, but contractions read better—in both dialogue and narrative  Do a search for “is not” “will not” “he is” etc. and replace with “isn’t” “won’t” “he’s” etc. wherever appropriate.

4. Passive Writing

By now you’ve probably heard over and over again that active writing is generally preferred over passive. The Find function is helpful for weeding out passive writing in an objective manner.  Search for words such as “was” “were” “to be” “could” and review each sentence individually to determine whether active voice works better.

For example:

Passive (Subject taking indirect action)
Active (Subject taking direct action)

He was walking to the store.

He walked to the store.

We were wondering if it was true.

We wondered if it was true.

Are you going to be there?

Will you be there?

He could feel the cool breeze.

He felt the cool breeze

5. Began/Started

Phrases beginning with derivatives of “began” or “started” should be used sparingly.  Is it important that he began to drum his fingers?  Or can he simply drum his fingers?  Does she need to start sneezing?  Or can she just sneeze?  A general rule of thumb is to not have someone “begin” or “start” something unless the text will also note when they stop. Use the Find function to identify those “began/begin”s and “starts/started”s and decide which ones should stay and which ones can go.

An important note of caution: resist the urge to get overly slash happy during this phase of editing. Occasionally, passive writing is appropriate, many times “that”s are necessary, and once in a while a character needs to “begin” doing something.   What you’re looking for is overuse of any of the above.  Now, fire up that Find and have fun…and enjoy reading your smoother manuscript when it’s once again time to start from the top.

Thanks so much, Bev. This is so helpful (believe me I wish I had seen this a few years ago - and I'm sure you do too!).  I hope that authors can take a few minutes to read through again and will be able to do some self editing before submitting their manuscripts to a  publisher, because these are ALL great tips!

And now...it's Thursday, and that means TIME TO BOUNCE!

Saving Sunni release!

Tomorrow is release day for Omnific, and our newest release is the follow up to Becoming Sage,  the amazing real-life glimpse into the world of BDSM by Kasi Alexander, Saving Sunni. This time around, Kasi's partner, Reggie Alexander has joined her to create a great story about the third part of their triad, sunni.

Compared to the rest of her poly family, Jessie Chambers—“sunni” to the local BDSM community—needs to grow up. While her serious sister slave, sage, struggles through college, their master, Sir Rune, insists that sunni needs a job. sunni finds a position at the local goth/kink store, The Fringe Element, and is immediately embraced by its quirky owner.

Things start to get complicated when sunni’s ex tracks her down, claiming he’s found God wants to be together again, and a video of sunni and Sir Rune doing a dramatic scene at the Keyhole ends up on television. sunni must find a way to restore her relationships, keep her master from being deported, take over running the store, and stop everyone else from trying to “save sunni.”

And as an extra bonus for all of the readers, and most especially Sir Rune lovers, we are releasing a free short about Rune's beginnings as a companion to the series. Learning the Ropes will give readers a great peek into how Rune became the strong Master that he is.

Reggie and Kasi were nice enough to take on our interview questions to let readers into their process and to pick out one of their favorite excerpts from their new book, Saving Sunni (okay their second favorite, because their first was too telling!).

Omnific: Okay, I know the story behind your new co-author, but can you take a few minutes to introduce Reggie to everyone and tell us a little about how the writing process worked for you two?

Kasi: Reggie and I have been in a polyamorous Master/slave relationship for almost six years now. He decided to help me pursue my goal of becoming published, so we made it an M/s exercise, where he would set word goals for me and monitor my progress. All of our projects have been done like this. We work out the plot as a group and split up which scenes each one wants to write. Then I put them all together in a single voice and make them consistent. I think the process works well for us.

Omnific: Saving Sunni is the second book in your Keyhole Series, was writing your second novel a different experience from your first? Was it a little easier knowing what to expect from the process?

Kasi: The second one was much easier than the first. I had much more confidence in myself and the process and we both had a better idea of how to plot and what pitfalls to avoid. We’ve had wonderful editors who have taught us the things to watch for in our writing as well. Saving sunni took about 2/3 the time to write that sage did!

Omnific: Your books center around the BDSM world, and the relationships of the people who live that lifestyle, are you finding there is more interest these days with the success of other books dealing with the same subject?

Kasi: Absolutely. The recent success of 50 Shades of Grey has generated (or at least brought out into the open) a wide interest in BDSM. The advent of Kindle and Nook also allows more readers to explore the genre without advertising what they’re reading, so they can give themselves permission to enjoy a wider range of books without censure.

Omnific: Since we are all about romance here at Omnific, what is your favorite romantic scene in a book?

Reggie: Ok, I know it’s selfserving, since there are so many wonderfully written romantic scenes in the world, but I have to say that my favorite is from Becoming Sage.  The scene towards the end of the book that we will call "The Dudley DoRight Scene" is my favorite. I know kasi likes it too but to me it sums up the whole point of the book and it makes me laugh every time I read it.  That scene allowed us to share some very private and personal connections between the characters. It gives the readers a glimpse into the often hidden playful nature of the “Big Bad Dominant" Sir Rune. Finally, it shows his level of commitment to the girls and that BDSM and power exchange can be light and fun as well as intense. The collaring scene right after is pretty powerful in my mind as well but the fun one is my favorite.

Omnific: So, if they made that book into a movie, who would you want to see in that scene? (or if they already have were you happy with who was cast or would you recast?)

Both: Sir Rune would have to be Ryan Reynolds.  He is such a versatile actor as he can be very serious and yet maintain a fun and playful (smart-ass) persona, both of which are important to portray our leading man. sage would be Emma Stone, I think. She is a very attractive brunette who can play a thoughtful and serious role without becoming a one-dimentional characture of our girl sage.

sunni is a tougher call for me.  She has to be someone who is playful, adventurous (if you've read the book I will just say "puppy" and you will know what I mean. If not, what are you waiting for? Go read it so you won't be left out! lol) and just a bit bratty. So I would have to say either Elisha Cuthbert or Amanda Seyfried.

Omnific: You know how much I loved Becoming Sage, and I love Saving Sunni as well (and who can forget Sir Rune’s little tidbit also available from Omnific Publishing…YUM!), do you two have any idea who will be next? (If I have a say, I really want to know Amy’s story and how she and Sir Matthew came to be…if you’re so inclined to please one of your editors.)

Kasi: amy’s story is certainly something we’re considering. Next we have tentative plans to continue the story from Rune’s point of view, and we are also intrigued by the idea of a book from the perspective of the new character, daisy.

Here is their favorite excerpt from Saving Sunni, released on June 19, 2012.

“I wanted to see you. So—how have you been?” His voice was casual, like he lived down the block and had just strolled in for a cup of tea, instead of having travelled halfway across the country to annoy me.
“I’ve been fine,” I said stiffly. “But that doesn’t answer the question. Why are you here?”
I saw movement from the corner of my eye. Geri was slowly meandering toward us down the length of the opposite wall. She was probably trying to look like she was shopping, or maybe counting inventory or something, but to me she looked more like Elmer Fudd ducking behind bushes hunting wabbits. I hoped Randy wouldn’t notice her. I didn’t think he was particularly dangerous, but he had hit me a few times when we were married and I couldn’t be completely sure. Come to think of it, it was a bit funny that I would divorce someone for hitting me, and then get into a BDSM relationship where I was struck regularly, and quite a bit harder. But of course it was a completely different thing. With Sir it was something I had negotiated and consented to.
Randy was considering the mannequins in the window and didn’t seem to notice Geri. When he turned back to me, there was a very serious look on his face. I immediately went into defensive mode and cringed away from him. I knew that look.
“Frankly,” he said quietly, “I don’t think you’re safe here. I heard that you’re in an unhealthy relationship and I’m very concerned about you.”
That didn’t ring true. “Who told you that?” I demanded.
“It doesn’t matter. What matters is your safety.”
My mother. It had to be my mother. But I hadn’t told her anything about my relationship, other than that I was living with an Austrian chemist named Rutger. She hadn’t even met him.
“Yes,” I agreed. “My safety is important to me, too. I want you to leave now before I get thrown in jail for assault. I don’t think jail would be the safest place for me either.”
“Jessie—”
Suddenly Geri was standing in front of him, her head coming to the approximate level of his nipples. She looked like a banty rooster about to attack a Great Dane.
“Please get out of my store,” she said, her voice shaking with what I presumed was anger, although by the way Randy looked down at her, it was obvious he thought it was fear.
“It’s a public place.” He smirked at her.
Not a good thing to do. She stood up on her tiptoes and hissed, “It’s my store and I have the right to ask you to leave. Now leave before I am forced to do something violent. I hate violence.”

Thank you both for taking the time to answer our questions. I know that you have a lot of readers who are looking forward to this new installment in The Keyhole Series, Saving Sunni. Congratulations and I can't wait to see what you have for us next!

Dr. Ivan Makes a House Call and Blog Bounce!

The first book promotional event for The Winemaker's Dinner: Appetizers, co-authored by Dr. Ivan Rusilo and Everly Drummond, was held in Denver, CO on May 26, 2012, in the home of Ms. Gail Kane, who played hostess for some 30 women. Dr. Ivan was on hand to tend to the guests and dubbed the event his first House Call. There were more than a few temperatures on the rise as Dr. Ivan read a steamy little excerpt before spending the rest of the night tending to his honored guests. The attendees ranged from Denver's local celebrities, to the socially connected, and entertainers to romance enthusiasts. The editor and owner of 5280 Magazine and Erica Cobb, entertainment girl around town, were kept just as rapt with Dr. Ivan as he mixed and mingled with the ladies and kept everyone's wine glasses full.

Wine was provided by the award winning MollydookerWines from Adelaide, Australia – producers of Dr. Ivan’s favorite wine,Carnival of Love, and the inspiration behind the book series. Guests had a chance to taste the wine that the hero and heroine enjoyed in the book and Dr. Ivan was all too keen on sharing the Mollydooker story and and their wines.

The Winemaker's Dinner, co-authored by Dr. Ivan Rusilko and Everly Drummond is due for release on July 31, 2012.

You can see some great pictures from Dr. Ivan's House Call here...see if you can tell when he was reading some of the "good parts"!
