New Release - Destiny's Fire

We have another new release to talk about!! Tomorrow Trisha Wolfe’s debut novel, Destiny’s Fire,  will be available from Omnific Publishing. We are so excited about Trisha’s book as it is our first Steampunk title!

We were lucky enough to get a minute of Trisha’s time as she gets ready for the exciting time of her release, and she answered a few of our questions and found one of her favorite excerpts from Destiny’s Fire.

It’s the year 2040, and sixteen-year-old Dez Harkly is one of the last of her kind—part of a nearly extinct race of shape-shifters descended from guardians to the Egyptian pharaohs. Her home and her secret are threatened when the Council lowers the barrier, allowing the enemy race to enter the Shythe haven.

As the Narcolym airships approach, Dez and her friends rebel against their Council and secretly train for battle. Not only is Dez wary of war and her growing affection for her best friend Jace, but she fears the change her birthday will bring. When Dez’s newfound power rockets out of control, it’s a Narcolym who could change her fate… if she can trust him.

Dez’s guarded world crumbles when she discovers why the Narcos have really come to Haven Falls, and she's forced to choose between the race who raised her and the enemy she's feared her whole life.

Omnific: Destiny’s Fire is Omnific’s first “Steampunk” book and it’s YA, a very hot genre right now. What drew you to writing not only a “Steampunk” story, but also a YA? Do you read a lot of YA yourself?

Trisha Wolfe: I’m so excited to be Omnific’s first Steampunk! I think the genre is going to be getting more attention as the year progresses. And by 2013, everyone will know what it is.

I devour Young Adult. I’ve read YA since I was a kid, all through HS, and on into my…you get the point. I’ve grown up reading V. C. Andrews, Christopher Pike, L. J. Smith, and a lot more. What I really love about today’s YA, and why I decided it was the right genre for me, is how it’s growing. The voice stays true to the genre, but it’s changing. I think as young adults change with each generation, the genre is changing with them. I really love where it’s being taken right now. And I can’t wait to see where it goes in the future. There’s no limit.

Omnific: I love that Dez is a strong heroine that the YA market can look up to. Where did you get your inspiration for her?

Trisha Wolfe: Hmm. This is a tough one. Honestly, my characters really just come to me. I’ve always looked up to strong heroines in novels, and also the ones who show their vulnerable side, too. Dez simply popped into my head one day. I saw her perfectly, and she was already my friend and a girl I felt I, as well as some girls and young women, could relate to.

Omnific: Can you tell us a little about your writing process? Where and when do you get your writing done?

Trisha Wolfe: Most of the time, I’m in bed lol. Sitting in chairs for hours hurts my back. It’s just uncomfortable. So I camp out on my bed, Law and Order on mute, Reese’s Sticks to my left, and a Coke on my nightstand. It’s very glamorous.

Omnific: Since Omnific is all about the romance...what is your favorite romance scene of all time?

Trisha Wolfe: Great question! And that one is kind of easy, but it’s hard to choose from two of my faves. Both are from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and from season six. The first is when Buffy and Spike kiss for the first time at the end of Once More with Feeling. And the other is when they get down, literally tearing the place down with them, in Smashed.

Omnific: Now, if they made that into a movie who would you want cast (or if they have already made a movie would you recast it)?

Trisha Wolfe: There’s no way I could recast Sarah Michelle Gellar and James Marsters. They’re so hot together. Perfect TV couple. I wish they would use them for a movie. I’m curious to see how the movie that’s been talked to death turns out with the new cast.

Omnific: And finally, Destiny’s Fire is meant to be a trilogy – have you been working on the next book?

Trisha Wolfe: I’ve written the first chapter. I have it plotted out, but have been swamped with side projects. I’m planning to dive in next month and complete it. I’m not sure if it will end up being a trilogy in the end. That was the plan, but after plotting, I’m wondering if a two book series will be perfect for this story. The characters really decide this.

Thanks so much, Trisha. Can’t wait for the next book and hope you get time to write very soon.

Trisha also performed the very hard task of picking one of her favorite excerpts from Destiny’s Fire to share with us.

Lana and I made our way through the mist, and I sat down next to Jace at the bar. He looked me over, giving an appraising scan before furrowing his brow. He hadn’t spoken to me since we first got here.

The bartender checked my ID, and I ordered a Clockwork Tangerine. “Two actually,” I corrected, noticing Lana’s pouting lips.

“Rum?” Jace turned toward me, eyes wide. “Oh, hell no.” He shook his head. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Ordering a drink. What does it look like?” I slipped my ID between my inner thigh and boot. Jace’s hand trailed mine and confiscated the ID, causing my stomach to flip violently as his fingers brushed my skin. “Hey! What are you doing?”

“Taking your ID. You can’t drink.”

I scowled at him. “And you can?”

“Yes.”

I huffed. “That’s sexist! How come you get to drink when you’re all upset and I don’t?”

He stared into my eyes, a desperate look on his face. “You’re upset?”

“You’re not the only one who’s freaked about the Narco situation,” I said, accepting my drink from the bartender. “I don’t like it any more than you do. But I know whining about it won’t change a thing. I just want to try and have fun at my birthday celebration.” I took a sip and nearly choked.

Jace screwed up his face. “Give me that.” He attempted to snatch my drink. I turned, sloshing a bit from the glass but keeping it in my hands.

“No,” I drawled. “And you never answered me. How come you can drink and I can’t?”

He released a heavy sigh. I barely heard it over the music. “Because, no one tries to take advantage of me if I get drunk. I’m not a hot chick that has to worry about some guy trying to get into my pants.” He looked me up and down. “Or my bustle.”

I stretched my eyes wide, amused. “So, I’m a hot chick?” I smiled. “And you’d probably look pretty cute in a bustle.”

He opened his mouth, then shut it. “Did you miss the point of that sentence?”

Congratulations, Trisha! And now that you’ve had a little peek at this new release, and if you have more questions,  you can always find Trisha:
